THIS IS THE START OF PORTING A AFM FOR A 1986 NA RX-7

WHEN I TAKE THE OLD ONE OUT I WILL
TAKE PHOTOS TO COMPARE TO

UPDATE: I HAVE INSTALLED THE PORTED AFM. THE E RESULTS ARE VERY GOOD.  I NOTICED A GAIN IN PERFORMANCE FROM 3200 UP TO REDLINE.  THERE IS ALSO A NOTICEABLE INCREASE IN THROTTLE RESPONSE.  ENGINE TEMPS WERE ALSO RUNNING 10 DEG LOWER.  I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE LOWER TEMPS AS I EXPECTED THIS TO MAKE A LEANER CONDITION BUT IT MAY BE ALLOWING THE DOOR TO OPEN QUICKER DUMPING MORE FUEL.  NO ADJUSTMENT TO MY IDLE WAS NEEDED AND THERE WAS NO CHANGE TO THE IDLE OF THE CAR (SMOOTH CONSTANT 650 RPM)

NOW THE PREVERBAL PROBLEM.  IF SOME PORTING IS GOOD WILL MORE BE BETTER.  I CAN REMOVE ALLOT MORE MATERIAL (SEE THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE)

DESCRIPTION BEFORE AFTER
ENTRANCE: CASTING SLAG AT TOP AND AT LEFT BY THE TEMP SENSOR HAS BEEN REMOVED AND afm11.jpg (60506 bytes) MASent1.jpg (56524 bytes)
ENTRANCE: CASTING SLAG REMOVED AT TOP AND AT LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES afm12.jpg (57023 bytes) MASent2.jpg (49414 bytes)
LOOKING THROUGH THE AFM WITH THE DIRECTION OF THE AIR FLOW: NOTE THAT OBSTRUCTIONS AT THE TOP CORNERS HAVE BEEN SMOOTHED AND BEVELED afm08.jpg (38642 bytes) MASinside1.jpg (50698 bytes)
EXIT: NOTE THE "CORNER" AND THE RIBS AND THE LIP ON THE LEFT HAVE BEEN REMOVED.  THE REMOVAL OF MATERIAL WAS TYPICAL AT ALL FOUR CORNERS AT THE EXIT OF THE AFM afm3.jpg (57696 bytes) MASexit1.jpg (49101 bytes)
EXIT: TRANSITION TO THE RIBS ON THE RIGHT HAS BEEN SMOOTH OUT afm1.jpg (56239 bytes) MASexit2.jpg (51332 bytes)
EXIT:SMOOTHING AT THE DUCT. THE LIB BELOW THE RIBS ON THE LEFT HAS BEEN REMOVED afm04.jpg (60221 bytes) MASexit3.jpg (51647 bytes)
EXIT: DIFFERENT VIEW SAME AS ABOVE afm07.jpg (65392 bytes) MASexit4.jpg (51635 bytes)
THE AREA THAT I HAVE OUTLINED CAN BE REMOVED. I AM CONCERNED AS TO WHAT IT WILL DO TO THE AIR FLOW AT IDLE.  IT LOOKS LIKE MAZDA WENT TO ALLOT OF TROUBLE TO CAST THE DUCTING INTO THE EXIT OF THIS PORT.   MAS-MODexit3.jpg (54910 bytes)
LOOKING THROUGH THE AFM AT THE AREA THAT WOULD BE REMOVED (ABOVE).  AS YOU CAN SEE IT WOULD OPEN UP THE EXIT OF THE AFM QUITE ALLOT.   MAS-MODinside1.jpg (53786 bytes)
ANOTHER AREA THAT I AM LOOKING AT SOME MORE REMOVAL OF ALUMINUM.  I ALSO AM CONSIDERING THE REMOVAL OF THE REMAINING RIBS BUT THEY APPEAR TO BE THERE FOR STRUCTURAL REASONS.   MAS-MODexit2.jpg (54325 bytes)
